A yokogi in the form of a carp with a rich patina and encrustations from exposure to smoke from the hearth. The yokogi with an upturned tail fin suggesting movement through the water. Because carp live in water, its presence was a symbolic water-charm meant to guard wooden homes against destructive fires. Carving the fish as "swimming" or moving through invisible water thus amplified their protective talismanic energy.
