An earthenware roof tile (kawara) from the Heian or Kamakura period. The cord pattern across the face was likely made by pressing a twisted rope into the wet clay before firing. The clay is high in iron and fired to shades of tan and brown. The edges are worn and rounded, as is common with excavated tiles. Mounted on a custom display stand.
