A sleeveless surcoat of heavy indigo-dyed cotton, edged all around in white piping. The back is split from the waist down, a cut that made it possible to wear on horseback or over a sword. A white appliqué crest sits between the shoulders: a four-petaled flower inside a square well frame (igeta).

The front closes with crossed indigo tabs, also piped in white, and the inside has a pair of ties in floral silk brocade. A paper patch at the back of the neck carries a handwritten ink inscription, likely a reused document placed there to stiffen the collar.
