Gunbai were a specialized form of fan used by Samurai officers in Japan to gI’ve commands to their troops. Unlike regular fans, gunbai were solid, not folding, and usually made of wood, wood covered with metal, or solid metal. Some sources suggest these were also used by priests, although the heavy weight and construction of this one suggest military use.

The gunbai is adorned with embossed bird motifs and writing on the front and embossed cloud and constellation motifs on the reverse. Professionally secured and mounted.
