A small bronze elephant standing four-square, head lifted and trunk curled inward toward the chest. The body is cast with a caparison bordered by raised bands and filled with an incised diaper pattern; the ears are modeled in low relief and the eyes finely detailed. Two apertures pierce the back, the larger for filling and the smaller for regulating airflow, allowing water to be released drop by drop onto an inkstone in preparing ink.
