A rectangular betel box with canted corners. The hinged lid opens to four compartments, each with its own small hinged cover. The outside is engraved all over with okir, the flowing scroll design of the Maranao, and the engraved background is filled with silver so the pattern stands out against the brass. The compartments held the parts of a betel chew: areca nut, betel leaf, slaked lime and tobacco, which were offered to guests as a welcome. Among the datu class, boxes this fine were a sign of rank and were carried in processions or shown at ceremonies. Warm patina overall, with expected wear inside.
