The rust-brown center is a kaki glaze, which gets its color from iron oxide. The floral design was made with wax resist. Wax was painted onto the clay before glazing, so when the dish was dipped, the glaze would not take in those areas and the slip or bare clay shows through.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHamada co-founded the Mingei movement with Sōetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach, among others. In keeping with Mingei ideas, he did not sign his everyday pieces.
