Large Minkanbutsu

Large Minkanbutsu

Minkanbutsu (民間仏) refer to folk Buddhist figures crafted by local hands rather than professional temple sculptors. Made by villagers such as carpenters or artisans, these statues were intended for everyday worship in private homes and shared community spaces.

Unlike the refined and solemn icons seen in major temples, minkanbutsu stand out for their informal, warm style. They carry the heartfelt wishes of people who lived in challenging conditions and reveal a grassroots expression of Japanese spirituality.

A particularly large and fine example at 50cm tall.
