Shigaraki Glass Crucible

Rare Shigaraki glass crucible. Shigaraki ware, with its high grit and silica content, was valued for its ability to withstand extreme temperature changes without cracking. Crucibles were typically thick-walled and brought to temperatures as high as 1,800 degrees to melt glass. This example shows signs of long use, with heavy deposits of ash and vitrified glass both inside and out. Because of such intensive use, few survive today.
